It started about three years ago. At first, twice a week -then three times a week. On these occasions the Scout Hall metamorphosed from a quiet, cold, wooden hut to a jumping, noisy, hot workout area where females and males, young and not so young, worked their bodies "to the max" with fitness instructor, Carol.
Carol arrived on Mull via Glasgow where, after teaching in secondary schools for years, she had become a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. Teaching young people in secondary was nothing compared to the challenge that awaited her in Tobermory. Tuesday afternoon saw the circuits class grow in popularity while Wednesday afternoon saw the introduction of a core conditioning class. Both these classes became the domain of the ladies and-my goodness-how these ladies have flourished. Fitness levels have greatly increased and carol has to push herself weekly to make each class interesting, motivating and worthwhile. Due to popularity, or downright idiocy, Carol introduced Metafit to the mix.
Suddenly, the males woke up to this high intensity workout and we had to start sharing our limited space in the hall with them - alongside, recently, some of our senior students from the High School. Is it the pumping music and complex body weight moves that have brought the guys out, or the fact that the class only lasts 30 minutes? You decide.....Nevertheless it is great to see the mix of males and females at this class.
The hall is being well used at the present by our healthy, fitness-driven community Monday..........Metafit, 5.50-6.20 Tuesday..........circuits, 1.30-2.30 Wednesday.....core conditioning, 1.30-2.30 and 5.45-6.45; then Metafit, 7-7.30
As well as the active living side, the sense of real community emanating from that small scout hall is palpable. Carol loves her time there and all the fabulous people she has encountered not only from Tobermory but Salen, Dervaig, Calgary, Bunessan, Iona; in fact the whole island seems to have been represented at some point in some class! In fact, even the occasional holidaymaker has made his/her way up to the hall.
As much as we all love the Scout Hall however, we long for the day when a new hall exists not only for the fitness classes but for all users of the facility.
